Cupcake vs. Muffin: Difference explained with MATT method
June 11, 20252 min read
Have you ever wondered while reading a recipe, "Wait a minute... is this a cupcake or a muffin?" I've even seen cupcake recipes labeled as muffins with a clear cupcake photo next to them. So you're not alone! This question comes up again and again in my classes. No wonder, since the two treats sometimes look so similar.
But in reality, they couldn't be more different. And because I love sharing baking knowledge with you, here's MATT, the easy and fun way to remember the difference between a cupcake and a muffin.
Fun fact: That's also my husband's name. ;)
M for method
The preparation makes the crucial difference.
Cupcakes need air! The batter is beaten for several minutes (4–8 minutes depending on the recipe) to allow the eggs to puff up nicely, creating a fluffy, soft texture, like a little cloud in your mouth.
Muffins are much simpler: dry and wet ingredients are only briefly mixed together. Not too long, or they'll become tough instead of fluffy!
A for appearance
The difference is immediately apparent: Cupcakes have a flat surface, perfect for decorating. Muffins, on the other hand, have that characteristic "dome" that often extends over the edge.
You can imagine cupcakes as little divas, perfectly styled and ready for a performance. Muffins, on the other hand, are more like their cozy cousins, casual and down-to-earth.
T for topping
Cupcakes can be topped with buttercream topping like a crown, sprinkled with decorations, or even personalized for your next corporate event .
Muffins? Rather purist. Sometimes with a bit of sprinkles on top, but you'll never find buttercream on them.
T for taste
Cupcakes are clearly a dessert. Sweet, sometimes with jam or little surprises inside.
Muffins, on the other hand, are more of a snack or breakfast with oatmeal, fruit, or nuts. They taste less sweet and are perfect with your morning coffee or as a snack between meals.
Why should you know the difference?
Whether you're planning a corporate event, decorating your child's birthday table, or leading a team looking for a special treat, it helps to know which pastries are appropriate for which occasion.
And if you ever forget? Just think of MATT ;)
